DOOMS DE POP
Abrasive rock band whose members include local promoter Garo Gallo of By the Way Magazine.

(Josh Prezant)
Once regarded primarily as a noise act, this band has added melodic elements over the past years and -- while still as anti-pop as ever -- has forged a lot of tuneful work.

Biography
Q&A with Garo Gallo and Yvonne Colón, by City Link Magazine
Together, they form local promotions group By the Way. Gallo also performs in the band Dooms de Pop.
How old are each of you?
GG: 25.
YC: 26.
What was the first show you produced?
GG: The Holy Terrors. The real, real first show was really just a party. We brought down a band from Orlando called Shotgun Wedding. It was cool.
What are your favorite bands?
GG: Sonic Youth.
YC: The Breeders.
GG: Yeah, The Breeders. Mars Volta.
What brought you to Bikini Bob's, where By the Way has recently begun presenting concerts?
GG: The view. The ocean.
What song are you embarrassed to admit you like?
GG: Whatever that first Shakira hit was, 'cause I liked it -- unfortunately.
YC: I don't know. I'll have to think about that one.
You're in a band called Dooms de Pop. So when do you predict Doomsday will hit?
GG: Right around Christmastime. I'll say Christmastime 2007.
What do you want to do with By the Way? Where do you see it going?
YC: We want to get artists and musicians who are not under contract or established -- the people who have to have day jobs to do what they want to be doing -- and get those people out. We want to start a Web site and magazine to promote those people.
GG: Right. Like the store clerk who's really a ballerina. Or the violinist who works at Eckerd.
Speaking of which, do you have other jobs?
GG: Currently? No.
YC: We live on a budget, and we do this. We struggle, but it's fun. We're doing what we want to be doing. … Hey, everybody likes "Copa Cabana," right?
What, the Barry Manilow song?
YC: Yeah. That's my favorite embarrassing tune.
